HBO Continues To Count Its Good 'Luck'
01/30/2012
Just as they did with Boardwalk Empire, HBO has again pulled off a neat trick in roping a critically acclaimed A-List Hollywood director to roll out the pilot of its latest Sunday night trip to the land of compelling, adult-oriented television drama. And just like Martin Scorsese was the perfect choice to recreate the dark, gangland backdrop of prohibition era America, the network could have made no finer choice to realize the colorful hustle and bustle that characterizes the world of professional horse racing – a world that’s reach extends simultaneously to points seedy and glamorous- than Michael Mann.

Unsupervised
01/30/2012
It seems like a recipe for success. FX’s new animated series, Unsupervised, is backed by the gang behind It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and includes the voice talents of Justin Long, Kristen Bell, Romany Malco and Fred Armisen. On top of that, FX is fast becoming known for its quality programming. But co-creator and writer, David Hornsby, who is also the voice of main character, Joel, can’t seem to find his place in the network’s stellar roster, and Unsupervised, which premiered after the phenomenal Archer, doesn’t hold up its end of the animation hour.

Archer - Season Three
01/30/2012
The Season Three premiere of Archer found the eponymous man-child spy face-to-face with his idol, Burt Reynolds. Much to Archer’s chagrin, Reynolds is dating his mother, the boozy/floozy, Malory. In order to break up the couple, Archer engages in a number of immature maneuvers, only to realize, during an excellent car chase sequence, that Reynolds may just be the man for his mom. In the episode, “El Contador,” Archer and Lana are back in the saddle as they strike out on a mission to capture a Latin American drug lord and claim the reward money.

Alcatraz
01/23/2012
For a network with such a proven track record of abusing genre television and it’s loud and dedicated fanbase, Fox is certainly making a decent fist of making amends recently. Having gone to bat for the much loved, but not so much-watched Fringe to get a full fifth season with which to wrap its story up, and suggested that they’re prepared to give sci-fi frontier saga Terra Nova another shot despite high production costs and less than stellar ratings, they’re now looking to get in bed with J.

Whitney
01/22/2012
Whitney made its debut last fall on NBC with a tired premise - one of modern love. Comedian Whitney Cummings plays the titular character, a quirky thirty-something living with her boyfriend, Alex. Through their relationship, and through those of their friends, the show explores questions of matrimony - its importance in a society where it’s no longer taboo to live together outside of marriage - and the contemporary dating scene. Since its premiere, Whitney has dealt with that shade of love between dating and marriage, and the pitfalls and hiccups that occur when two people share their lives.

Shameless - Season Two
01/16/2012
Showtime’s transatlantic import Shameless returned with its season two premiere, and with it, the Gallagher family and its alcoholic patriarch, Frank. These characters really are 'shameless'. It's summer time, and the Gallaghers all have their summer jobs. Fiona, the oldest and the one in charge, has no qualms getting her little sister, Debbie, to run a daycare out of their house while she crashes. She needs the sleep because she works nights as a cocktail waitress at a club, and parties afterwards with her new pseudo-boyfriend – the replacement of her ex, Steve.
