Batman: Arkham City
11/28/2011
Rocksteady Games really enjoyed something of a Cinderella Story with their 2009 sleeper smash-hit Batman: Arkham Asylum. Coming out of nowhere they all but revolutionized the idea of how brand name titles should be treated – intelligently and with thought, who knew?! – and delivered one of the most intricate and involving action-adventure games in recent years. Saddled with the weight of expectation that such success inevitably brings, the big question was could they repeat the trick? The answer is, handily.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine
09/12/2011
While original Warhammer universe has already had it’s day as an MMO (albeit losing badly to market leader World of Warcraft), the futuristic spin-off Warhammer 40,000 – named for the year in which it is set – has remained the exclusive property of the real-time strategy genre, until now. Finally, it comes to the third-person action genre, and, as you might expect from a fictional universe built around devastating weaponry, pitiless extermination, and unending war, it fits right at home.

Marvel V. Capcom 3
04/19/2011
With Street Fighter 4, Capcom revived the 2D fighting game as a viable form. Upon its release, and quickly gained popularity, it wasn’t long before gamers started asking questions about Capcom’s other dormant fighters. People wanted to know if there would be another Darkstalkers, Rival Schools, Capcom vs. SNK, and the list continues. But among all these games, arguably the most anticipated was Marvel vs. Capcom 3. The series, which pits some of Capcom’s most popular characters against the comic book heroes and villains of the Marvel universe, has been a favorite amongst fighting game enthusiasts for years.

Dead Space 2
03/02/2011
While not mutually exclusive, horror and terror are two different sensations. Horror is more about building an atmosphere, while terror is about building tension. Dead Space 2, a sci-fi survival horror game developed by Visceral Games, achieves both sensations. It also manages to be an incredibly slick third-person sci-fi shooter, more so than the first game. This is most likely due to its efficient mechanics and the linear progression of its campaign. Dead Space 2 benefits from a streamlined experience and a strong characterization of its protagonist, while maintaining an atmosphere and an increased action quota.

Call of Duty: Black Ops
01/26/2011
Call of Duty: Black Ops is the seventh iteration of the series, which has become an annual event since the beginning of this generation. As a billion-dollar franchise, there will be no end until a cultural fatigue sets in. What is apparent, after playing Black Ops, is that while the Call of Duty series is in its prime right now, its appeal could very quickly wane. All it’ll take will be one failure and the franchise will need a “reboot” (things are already turbulent for the upcoming Modern Warfare 3; to be released later this year).

Mass Effect 2
01/09/2011
Bioware’s Mass Effect 2, an epic role-playing shooter, is without a doubt the best game of 2010. Few sequels are as distinct from their predecessor and fewer still have as many genuine improvements. Mass Effect 2 has higher production values than the first game, has more streamlined gameplay, and it is also deeper than the first game. With Mass Effect 2, practically everything has been improved; it is the sequel all game developers should aspire to create. Set two years after a large-scale attack on the Citadel, a massive alien space station that serves as the galaxy’s capital, our hero, Commander Shepard, is killed by a new enemy and then brought back to life by the paramilitary pro-human extremist group known as Cerberus.
